Study # 3
Part
Name: Flanged hub prototype
Material: 303 stainless steel
Challenge:
To produce a small quantity of a part with a large OD, a large,
thin flange, tight tolerances (± .0005) and good surface
finishes, from a tough material while removing a large volume of
material.
Solution:
The tough 303 stainless implies high cutting forces, but
the thin flange limited the chucking pressure that could be used,
so we designed special fixturing that held the piece securely without
warping the flange. The deep groove in this tough material required
a very rigid tool holder to maintain the surface finishes required
on high-pressure hydraulic sealing surfaces, so we designed and
fabricated a special holder for very carefully chosen inserts, and
used judicious speeds and feeds.
